Could yet be a fake... but the people on the Motionbased forum reported this as:

Quote:
GARMIN Forerunner 310XT Garmin Forerunner 310XT
Wake the triathlete within you with the next generation of sports watch with GPS. Forerunner 310XT
Forerunner 310XT gather all in one and is completely waterproof, has up to 20 hours of battery life and can quickly and easily moved from the wrist to bicycle handlebars. Forerunner? 310XT
Forerunner 310XT calculates, displays and stores the exact data for distance, pace, pulse, and can then wirelessly transfer information wirelessly to the computer. Via Garmin Connect, you can then save, analyze, share and watch their training sessions.

But then MotionBased pulled the posts from the thread and described them as "speculative."

It's official - http://garmin.blogs.com/my_weblog/2009/04/waterproof-forerunner-310xt-goes-the-extra-mile-for-multisport-athletes.html

Quote:

Boasting up to 20 hours of battery life and a sleek, comfortable design, the newly announced Forerunner 310XT fills the multi-sport needs of cross-training competitors, endurance elites and weekend walkers alike.

“The waterproof Forerunner 310XT is the evolution of the iconic Forerunner 305, building off of what users love and introducing key benefits they’ve requested,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “By adding unmatched wireless connectivity, up to 20 hours of battery life and a more comfortable build, Forerunner 310XT will bring Garmin’s leading GPS technology to more athletes and events than ever imagined.”

There's also a new "improved heart rate from Finland" version of the 405 - the 405CX - http://garmin.blogs.com/my_weblog/2009/04/make-every-mile-count-with-forerunner-405cx.html

Just how close to Polar's naming strategy is that?

Must admit, I checked the dates on the articles - April SECOND!

Yeah, I'll take a 310XT.

What do they mean "heart rate data does not transmit while underwater"? My Polar F6 works perfectly well in the pool, so why not this?

The 405CX doesn't look that different to the 405, except the HR data is differenter. Same bezel design, and presumably same multisport and display limitations.

I don't need to replace my 301 yet.

But when I do, then the 310XT looks good for me based on:
- having real buttons
- having longer battery life

I don't care about the ANT+ part of it, nor about the waterproofing - although if you could open water swim and keep reasonable satellite lock, then that could be interesting :)

tms has explained this to me - it's something to do with the radio frequency used - Polar have two different frequencies - so some Polar's work and some don't.

First word on price - $399 from http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/GAR116/

From what they did on the 305 and 405 releases, I guess they'll be selling in limited numbers for 299-399 euros/pounds/dollars at the Spring marathon expos - maybe with special offers like free shoes?

So it's really of minimal benefit over the 305, except for additional battery life, and for saving "valuable seconds" in T1?

Agree about wireless being of limited benefit, and the GPS is going to be useless in an indoor swim (did you see the GPS trace of my stationary rowing on Sunday?!), but having no HRM data on a swim makes it pretty pointless.

And the 405CX seems like pointless rebranding of the 405 to me.

Pfft. Bump my shoes competition post, HW: this one's a dead duck.

As posted in St Felsewhere, this actually looks a BOA from a number of levels.
