Shiraz wore our old igotu tracker for her swim today - seemed to work quite well - http://www.runningfreeonline.com/act/546658/subView/Player (note that I've hacked the total distance as I didn't follow her quite as far!)

We've had this GPS for maybe 2 years - but it's been buried in the back of a cupboard

It's a small device, fits neatly on the goggle straps, and seems to be quite waterproof - http://www.frequencycast.co.uk/igotu.html

Retails for around $50 - so far looking like we'll be using it more :)

Looks good. I used my 310xt in my swimcap for the first time on Monday seemed to work well, although I have no way of confirming the distance traveled.

The new firm ware Garmin release should have made the 310XT relatively accurate in an open water swim. The map may not be pretty, but the distance should be fairly accurate. Is there any reason for putting your 310XT in your swim cap?

I put it in the swim cap as I read that the 310xt isnt accurate on the wrist as it goes below the water and therefore loses GPS signal. So having it in the swim cap means its above the water the majority of the time.

Might try it on the wrist when I go to the lido soon.

My primary concern when putting the watch under the swim cap is the higher probability of having it knocked off by another swimmer, which may cause irreparable damage. One other thing I do when I swim is to put the watch in a zip lock bag before inserting it under the swim cap. This ensures that the device does not get soaked too much. By the way, I am referring to the FR305; and I suspect that the 310XT would not require this much attention.
