So if I posted in this topic category, I should earn myself a little skier icon?

Actually I like skiing a lot, but not that hardened Telemark walking uphill stuffCrying

I think it's quantity of posts not their location, sadly.

Haven't been since school, and I absolutely loved it. Would very much like to go again, even more so now I can take a gadget with me!

I *love* skiing.

I didn't start until 10 years ago - got put off because my brother really badly broke his leg on the school ski trip.

My first trip was quite scary - and very hard work - it wasn't fair paying 150 pounds for a lift pass when all I got to use was the rope pull in the nursery - and it was really hard work falling over all the time.

Now it's very different - we go pretty much we're snowbladers who ski from first lift until last - this year we went to Les Arcs - huge ski area when combined with its neighbour - and we had a very nice chalet (great company!)

Only problem was the price - the holiday was cheap but the lift pass prices have gone up maybe 30% and the Pound:Euro conversion rate was at 1:1. We ate in the chalet a lot!

Have also skiied:
- Les Deux Arcs, France
- Banff, Canada (lots)
- Three Valleys - Meribel (lots)
- Whakapapa, NZ (got very sunburnt!)
- Sella Ronda, Italy (loved it!) - plus a few other bits nearby (Marmalade glacier was excellent)
- somewhere near Turin... can't remember the name!
- Mayhofen, Austria
- Milton Keynes and Tamworth snowdomes :)

Ski resorts are also fab for summer holidays - have been to Zell and to Morzine for MTB, walking, rafting and other action.

I had my first skiing holiday this year - went to Alpe d'Huez which is a great resort - in fact my avatar is me cycling up to Alpe d'Huez so I can confirm what Holly says about resorts being great for summer holidays.

AdH has plenty of greens for beginners, I found most of the blues challenging too, which I suppose is only right for a first weeker. But thats what you get for having a pushy highly experienced skier OH - she was getting her own back for me taking her up some nasty climbs on her old worse than Cycle King bike in Snowdonia!

We were thinking of going skiing again over Easter, but decided against it and booked to go over New Year - Ellmau in Austria is the destination. It's pretty low down so hope we're lucky with the snow.

Bump for this thread.......

How did you get on in Tignes Holly?? I see you mentioned an injury, hope it wasn't totally at the hands of skiing! Interestingly I saw so many people at the airport on Saturday with slings, crutches or wheelchairs it was scary!

I've just got back from Ellmau, and loved it. The snow was a bit ropey towards the end of the week, it was mild and no fresh snow for a few days. But it was still perfectly skiable, just harder work.

The ski area (Skiwelt) is huge, so we covered some good ground, I garmined a few days so will upload at some point. Plus the lift pass computer system tracks which lifts you've used and provides a profile which is pretty cool.

Last year was my first ski holiday, so I was a total beginner, but I actually came home from this holiday feeling like a skier. So much so any spring plans for races etc.... might be put on the back burner to accommodate another week away at Easter (although in spring there should be more daylight hours so it's may be possible to train too).

Glad you had fun in Austria. Like the sound of that lift system printout.

I had a great time in Tignes - the resort and snow were both good. For once we didn't have a snow shortage - in fact we had too much snow - especially on the last day - and we also had problems with it being really, really cold - minus 25 - bbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrr

My big crash was on that last day... literally in the last 100m of the day - I was trying to race Shiraz down the slalom... I live and learn! Nothing too badly injured - just a little limp.

From my experience Easter skiing really damages spring marathon preparation - but it's worth it!

Glad to hear that the crash wasn't too bad.

I saw how cold it was, not pleasant. It was hovering around freezing most days for us. The lifts were very impressive, no queues whatsoever, it was a bit of a bunfight at AdH the same time last year.

Luckily I'm not planning an Easter marathon, so no mega training to damage!! I'm just not going to plan any races around that time just in case (so I think I've become addicted to skiing!).

Here's a link to one of the days skiing from the lift pass tracking system.

http://bit.ly/5UthcA quite neat, a little flawed though in that it tracks your lift usage, but obviously doesn't know the exact route you took down to the next lift. It also tracks use of the furnicular up, but not down as you don't have your pass scanned to get down, so it always assumes that you skied down. On this particular day we didn't as it was snowing heavily and the OH was having visibility issues as her goggles kept steaming up (typically they'd been fine all week when she didn't properly need them!).

It's that season of the year again - Do any of you guys partake in any of these two winter sports?
I actually only started snowboarding very late last season, and sh*t it is painful especially in the first few days of learning... I can see how a lot of people can easily get discouraged during that timeframe. The snow resorts/parks near our area just opened within the past week or two for this season. I'm actually still learning though, and just got my own gear; it's fun!
