I love the TBP numbers (even with all of the known caveats). My typical runs are all on fairly hilly terrain, so having some way to normalize my activities is really useful.

I would love to see another column that adjusts my total times based on the TBP number to give a theoretical time for a flat (x/100) course. For example, if there was a course that had a TBP number of (50/140) the site would also calculate the TBP number for an equivalent flat course. For this example we'll say the number comes out to be (40/100). Now let's say it took me 150 minutes to run the real course. The theoretical time for a flat course would be: 150 * (40/50) = 120. The site could add this idealized number in another column, like PFT (predicted flat time) or some other suitably obscure acronym Wink .

It would be useful to see this number on individual laps too. My splits tend to be all over the place depending on how nasty the hills are for each section. It would be nice to see a normalized number, so I can get an idea of how fast I'm going relatively speaking. This is a particular problem when I'm doing any sort of interval work. Since I have to judge by effort instead of pace, it would be good to see some sort of mathematical confirmation that my 90% effort on an uphill section is at least approximately equal to my 90% effort on a downhill section.

Also, since this is my first post, I would just like to say great job on the site. I appreciate all of the work you've done and the site keeps getting better ThumbsUp. Thanks.

Oooooh - I like the PFT bit ThumbsUp

We could do this quite addition quite quickly (if we could find room for them!)... but I think we should probably do a running model as well as a biking one - and we should probably apply some more smoothing to all that bumpy GPS data?

It's interesting to hear that you are enjoying TBP - thanks. It's good to know that the numbers are helpful. At the risk of opening a proverbial hornet's nest, what are your caveats?

Thanks for the comments and ideas - and thanks for the acronym BigGrin

By caveats I just meant that I had read the original threads and understood that the whole algorithm can only be expected to be an approximation (ie. hilliness is a vague term, factors like wind, surface, temperature aren't included). Also, like you said, the GPS data isn't going to be perfect either.

I understand if you are reluctant to add a new column and risk creating more confusion than benefit. For me at least, it would be useful. Maybe we could get some experimental results. It would be interesting to see if the algorithm was able to do accurate predictions. Maybe the biking model is accurate enough already. I would think that the increased effort to run a given slope would be proportional to the increased effort to bike the same slope. Maybe Confused

You're welcome for the acronym Smile
