This came up in a private conversation - but I thought I'd ask on here too.

I've personally seen high (220+) heart rate spikes at the start of some of my activities... I've also heard about others seeing this too.

Among the solutions for this I've heard are:
- Don't wear a technical tee shirt
- Don't carry a phone
- Try changing the strap batteries
- Try changing the strap

Any other suggestions?

Make sure the contacts are well wetted or use an electo-lube. With the new soft straps it does help is both sides of the strap are well wetted.

I don't get many spikes at the start now, irrespective of the shirt, but when very wet due to sweat or atmospheric moisture precipitation, the soft straps will throw a wobbly. Probably because of 'shorting' across the contacts.

I had this on my first time out with the 305 (Hollywoof I think we talked about this.) I haven't had anything of the sort since, thinking back I still had my Nike+ transmitter in my shoe (who knows, that may have caused it.)

I also put KY-Jelly on the back of the sensors, the stuff is water based so it doesn't stain. And I've read it is very close to electro-lube, only cheaper.

ah, is that a known issue then??? i use a forerunner 405 and have most of the time spikes in the first 5 - 10 minutes of my runs. not as high as 220+ but up to 170/180 before it settles at around 130 on a slow run. i thought i have a 'funny' heartbeat. good to hear that it's the garmin and not my heart :)

btw. hello, i'm new around here - just wanted to say hi!
love the easy garmin upload facility!

The times i've had these spikes, were because of a shirt. My phone doesn't influence the HR. Even when i wear it on my chest. My experience is, if the battery is low, you should experience spikes not only at the beginning but during the ride and also, no HR at all. Especially when the distance between the unit and the belt are bigger ie at skating.
For skating some people wear the strap on their back, this doesn't work for me. I don't get a hr signal, but for a team member this works well.
My advice is good moisture with water (or gel) and wear a good shirts. Then you don't have those spikes at the begining. Ofcourse my experiences are on one type of unit a FR305.

I've had a 50mph speed spike. I think it isn't something one can especially 'build out'.

I resolved the spike problem with a Garmin Classic Heart Rate Monitor today - which should be compatible with most Garmin devices.

After 12 months of heart rate spikes with the Garmin Forerunner 310XT and it's soft strap I bought a Classic Heart Rate Monitor which is not as comfortable, but a lot more resistant to static electricity.

When using the Garmin Premium/Soft strap that comes with the 310XT it generated so much static electricity against my clothes that I got a zap every 200 m when I discharge (when touching the HR monitor on the treadmill). But after I switched to the Classic Heart Rate Monitor I didn't get a zap even after 8000 m.

So with the new HR monitor I was finally able to monitor my run accurately since I bought the very expensive 310XT..

Garmin knew about the problem when I contacted their support and offered to switch, but that included being without my HR monitor for 1-2 weeks which is why I simply bought a new one from Amazon instead.

I arranged a swap for the 'old style' strap through Garmin Support and my retailer. The retailer - Trig Instruments in Wellington, agreed to send me a replacement strap first before I returned the soft strap. Nice people.

See http://www.runsaturday.com/act/288551 from my Edge 500 - the spike is not a Forerunner-only phemomenonenonenon.

I've only just started using the HRM on my 310XT. Didn't like the strap it came with at all. But I recently got a new Polar HRM (cheapish), for the gym. It came with a new Wearlink strap: http://www.polar.fi/en/products/accessories/WearLink_Strap. This is different to the old Polar Wearlink strap and is compatible with the Garmin transmitter. The new strap, unlike the old Wearlink one & the Garmin one, doesn't fasten via the transmitter being attached to each end, but has a solid band across the front, to which you clip your transmitter. The fastening is a simple loop & hook slightly to the side. It's a lot easier to get on & off. I've not experienced any spikes like you mention, although weirdly sometimes my mile splits show a max HRM of zero.

I just have to say that the Garmin strap feels cheap & nasty compared to the Polar one. Very disappointing, because I love my 310XT.
